Join Maidstone Homeless Care as our HR Trustee and help shape a supportive, values-driven workplace. Use your HR expertise to make a real difference in the lives of people experiencing homelessness.
What will you be doing?
Maidstone Homeless Care (MHC) is seeking a passionate and experienced HR professional to join our Board of Trustees. This voluntary role is a chance to use your skills to support the team behind our essential services—shaping an inclusive and supportive working environment.
Where We Are Now
For over 30 years, MHC has helped people in Maidstone facing homelessness or crisis. Our day centre, food bank, and supported accommodation offer a vital safety net. As demand grows, our staff and volunteers are under increasing pressure, and ensuring their wellbeing and development is more important than ever.
Our board is focused on strengthening internal processes, supporting staff and volunteers, and ensuring our HR practices are fair, effective, and compliant. We are now looking for a trustee with HR experience to help guide us through this next stage of development.
About the Role
As our HR Trustee, you’ll advise on all people-related matters—supporting the board and staff team with practical guidance and strategic oversight. You’ll help ensure we recruit well, support our people effectively, and meet our responsibilities as an employer.
Key Responsibilities
- Recruitment & Retention - Support recruitment, onboarding, retention strategies and advise on salary structures, contracts, and benefits
- Training & Development - Help shape staff and volunteer training opportunities
- Policy & Compliance - Ensure HR policies are current and legally compliant by monitoring compliance against employment law and safeguarding
- Culture & Engagement - Promote wellbeing, inclusion, and positive employee relations and help foster a respectful, people-first culture
- Advisory Role - Act as the HR lead on the board and provide guidance on sensitive or complex HR issues
This role requires around 5 hours per month, including monthly board meetings (second Tuesday, 5–7pm). No prior trustee experience is required—training and support are provided. Join us and use your HR expertise to support the people changing lives.
What are we looking for?
We’re looking for someone with solid HR experience who is ready to use their expertise to make a real difference. You might be a generalist, HR manager, consultant, or retired professional—what matters most is your ability to bring practical knowledge and good judgement to the board.
You’ll need a strong understanding of UK employment law, HR policies and procedures, and experience dealing with matters such as recruitment, performance, employee wellbeing, or compliance. Experience in the charity or voluntary sector is a bonus, but not essential.
As a trustee, you’ll be expected to take a strategic view, while also being willing to offer practical support when needed. You should be comfortable advising on sensitive HR issues, and confident engaging with staff and trustees in a constructive and respectful way.
You’ll also need to be a team player—someone who listens well, contributes thoughtfully, and can help shape fair and inclusive HR practices that reflect the values of Maidstone Homeless Care.
Lived experience of homelessness, housing insecurity, or using support services is welcomed, and we actively encourage applications from people of all backgrounds. Diversity of perspective strengthens our board and helps us better support our community.
Key skills and qualities that would suit this role include:
- Demonstrable experience in HR, including policy, compliance, or employee relations
- Understanding of UK employment law and HR best practices
- Confidence in advising on sensitive or complex issues
- Strategic thinking, with a hands-on and collaborative approach
- Clear communication and strong interpersonal skills
- Commitment to equality, inclusion, and staff wellbeing
- Ability to balance professional judgement with the values of a small charity
- Willingness to commit time and energy to a voluntary role
If you want to make a real impact with your skills and help shape a supportive and inclusive charity, we’d love to hear from you.
What difference will you make?
As HR Trustee at Maidstone Homeless Care, your impact will be felt across every part of the organisation. By supporting the people who deliver our services, you’ll help ensure the charity remains compassionate, compliant, and resilient as we face growing demand.
Our staff and volunteers are at the heart of what we do. They offer vital support to people experiencing homelessness or hardship - but like many small charities, we rely on a small team and limited resources. Your input will help ensure that team feels supported, empowered, and able to thrive.
You’ll play a key role in shaping a healthy, inclusive working culture - promoting wellbeing, fair processes, and strong people practices. From helping us recruit and retain the right people to advising on staff development and compliance, your expertise will help MHC become an even better place to work and volunteer.
You’ll also provide valuable support to the board - guiding sensitive HR discussions, influencing strategic decisions, and ensuring we meet our legal responsibilities as an employer. Your people-first perspective will help shape a stronger, more sustainable future for the charity.
Ultimately, your contribution will help MHC care for the people who care for others - ensuring our team can continue delivering life-changing services to those most in need.
